Graduation Ceremony Highlights: Congratulations to the Class of 2017

On June 23, 2017, sixty-one seniors graduated from Barack Obama Green Charter High School in the presence of faculty, family, friends and esteemed guests. As a result of our emphasis on college preparation, sustainability and systems thinking, this year’s graduating class will be attending colleges and universities scattered across the NorthEast.

Two of the class’ most outstanding students received scholarships to attend esteemed in- and out-of-state universities. Aluba Uche will be heading to Pennsylvania this fall to attend Lincoln University—with a full tuition scholarship. Matthew Benjamin also received a merit scholarship from Seton Hall University amounting to $84,000. During the graduation ceremony, Salutatorian Anandah Gomez gave a riveting address to her classmates.

Critical race and gender theory subject matter expert, Stephanie Merryfield, delivered a keynote address to this year’s graduating class centered on the need for disruption as it relates to equity, diversity and inclusion. As a minister, instructional design consultant, and researcher at Princeton University, Stephanie is well versed in serving as a social change agent.

As we send off this next generation of graduates, it is our hope that each student takes our lessons on sustainability, critical thinking and leadership with them. These skills and practices will translate into academic and professional excellence. Congratulations to the Class of 2017!
